The CVNers who volunteer to help non-profits serve the Arlington community understand the value of giving their time. For some of us in our 20s or 30s, this is the most practical method of giving back to the community. For some of the same young Arlingtonians and for many others, philanthropic giving or giving of treasure, is equally important.
For those interested in expanding or maximizing their philanthropic giving, I’d like to share information about a new initiative. I’m working with several organizations in Arlington, such as the Arlington Community Foundation, CVN, and Leadership Arlington, to set up a philanthropic giving circle. To put it more simply, I’m working with these groups to set up an opportunity for young Arlingtonians (20 and 30 somethings) to pool their financial resources to make a greater philanthropic impact on the needs of the Arlington community. The members of this giving circle would 1) donate to a collective fund, 2) work together to select a cause or category each year (i.e. education, homelessness, hunger) 3) evaluate and then distribute grants to selected Arlington non-profits. It’s a great way to turn your individual donation into a much larger donation with an even larger impact.
In addition to the community impact described above, the giving circle would be a great opportunity for young Arlingtonians interested in giving back to get to know each other socially and professionally (networking), and learn more about philanthropy and the needs of the Arlington community.
