Hello and happy Memorial Day! With the unofficial start of summer upon us, I hope that all of you have fun plans over the next few months. Of course, I also hope that you'll make some time to volunteer with CVN! Whether you prefer hanging out in the sun (with sunscreen on, of course) or the cool A/C, our calendar is packed with great opportunities.
A few notes before I get to the details:
- Thank you to everyone for supporting me in my new role as Chairperson. It's never easy to follow someone like Brendan O'Connor, whose dedication and passion for CVN were clear from the start, but I'm inspired and looking forward to this greater role. If you are also looking to be more involved, there are currently two openings on the Monthly Volunteering Committee (MVC) that you can read about here: MVC positions.
- May was a busy month for CVN! Many thanks to our wonderful volunteers who helped with the American Heart Association's Heart's Delight, the AFAC Letter Carriers Food Drive, Taste of Arlington, and Gardening at the Arlington Traditional School. Click here to see pictures of our volunteers in action.
- Our kickball team, CVN Kicks Grass, has a 1-3 record. Though they might not lead in the standings, they are tops when it comes to fun! You can support them at their games on Thursday nights or hang out with them afterward. Their schedule is on the CVN calendar and there's more info below.
- Last, but not least, be sure to check out The CVN Forum, our awesome blog! Recent posts include "Being a Flexible Volunteer" and a volunteer profiles of Kellen MacBeth and Kelly Corbally. If you'd like to blog or to be featured in an upcoming volunteer profile, e-mail us.
- Gulf Branch Nature Center Invasive Weed Pull - Saturday, June 12, 9:30 am-12 pm | Help keep Arlington parks beautiful, get exercise, and have fun all at the same time! Join fellow CVN volunteers at Gulf Branch Nature Center and help remove invasive plants and litter from the park land. When we're done, anyone interested in hanging out a while longer can go out for lunch in North Arlington. Find out more, RSVP: Gulf Branch.
- Arlington Youth Soccer Tournament - Saturday, June 19, 9:45 am-1 pm | CVN has been invited to volunteer at the Youth Soccer Tournament sponsored by the Arlington County Gang Task Force. The event is a combination of a soccer tournament and a "dialogue" session with the players where high school aged youth, many of whom are at some level of risk of being involved in a gang, will get to have fun playing soccer and discuss issues important to them. Volunteers who choose to be table facilitators should have some experience facilitating a discussion among youth. The table facilitation will start at 10:00 am while the lunch serving will start at 11:00 am. Find out more, RSVP: Soccer.
- Recurring Volunteering @ AFAC - Saturday, June 19, 12:30-2:30 pm | Help out Arlington Food Assistance Center bagging rice, beans, produce, etc. This is a recurring volunteer opportunity and the group will be meeting for brunch beforehand.
