Volunteer Corner - in the Citizen

Check out this recent post from the Citizen featuring Community Volunteer Network (originally posted at http://arlingtoncitizen.wordpress.com on May 21, 2010 - reposted here with permission from the editor):

"Brendan O’Connor’s volunteer efforts were honored in April at the Annual Volunteer Appreciation Celebration, where O’Connor was recognized for his innovative leadership as 2009 chair of the Community Volunteer Network (CVN).

CVN is an active social network for young adults in their 20s and 30s who are dedicated to making a difference in Arlington through volunteering, building networks, socializing and developing leaders. As chairman, O’Connor grew the network by using collaborative technology and actively recruiting and training volunteer leaders. He launched new initiatives, including a partnership with the Committee of 100 and a new interactive blog. Board Member J. Walter Tejada, who launched CVN during his first term on the Board, presented the award.

Growing gardens and building leaders

CVN builds networks and leaders in our community through participation in recurring and onetime volunteer activities that foster strong relationships between young adult volunteers and community groups and nonprofit organizations. This spring a group of CVN volunteers joined students at Arlington Traditional Elementary School to work on the school’s garden. Recognizing CVN Volunteers During National Volunteer Week

Sunday kicks off National Volunteer Week, Celebrating People in Action.  Community Volunteer Network (CVN) will be celebrating a specific person who has been very active for the last year.  Brendan O'Connor, the Chair of CVN, is being recognized on Sunday with an Arlington County Outstanding Volunteer Award.  Brendan earned this award through his dedication, leadership, and innovation.

CVN runs smoothly because of hard-working volunteer leaders like Brendan, but it is the large number of active volunteers that make CVN such a success.  Last year, 177 people engaged in service through CVN.  Through your energy and enthusiasm, we are able to have a major impact on the Arlington community, and show that Arlington County's fastest growing part of the population (the 20/30 somethings) are also some of the most committed to building community.  Thank you for your service.
