Community Volunteer Network: meet-up, ice skating, gardening & more!

CVN Chair's Report

Spring is fast approaching and it's a great time to be outside, especially if you love to garden or wish you had a flowerbed of your own to take care of. CVN volunteers are helping two local schools landscape and maintain their gardens and both groups would love to have more help.

Our calendar also has some great indoor events, including helping at the Sister Cities International Annual Conference and helping kids ice skate with the Arlington County Department of Therapeutic Recreation.

No matter your interest, I hope we'll see you at an upcoming event! And, if you have any ideas you'd like to share, please let me know.

Thanks for being a great group of volunteers!

Tiffany

Upcoming CVN Events
  • Sister Cities International Annual Conference - Saturday, March 5, 10:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. | CVN volunteers will be helping at the 55th Annual Sister Cities International Conference in Arlington. The conference draws more than 500 elected and appointed city officials, business executives, educators, nonprofit leaders, community activists, and volunteers from across the U.S. and around the world for a collective discussion regarding the future of citizen diplomacy. Our specific task will be determined on-the-spot, but the conference needs a lot of help greeting people, providing directions and information, and acting as a resource for the planners. A fun and spontaneous attitude will come in handy for this since we'll be adapting to their needs! Find out more, RSVP: Sister Cities Conference Sign Up
  • AFAC Food Bagging - Saturday, March 5, 12:30 p.m. - 2:30 p.m. | Help out Arlington Food Assistance Center (in Shirlington) by bagging rice, beans, oatmeal, produce and other items the center buys in bulk. Find out more, RSVP: AFAC Food Bagging Sign Up
  • March Monthly Meetup @ Fire Works Pizza (Courthouse) - Tuesday, March 8, 7:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. | Join CVN at Fire Works Pizza to learn more about our upcoming events and meet fellow volunteers. Our guest speaker, Alyssa Duda, will discuss volunteer opportunities to help kids in Arlington through the Buckingham Youth Brigade. Find out more, RSVP: CVN Facebook Invite
  • ATS Schoolyard Garden Crew Launch Meeting - Thursday, March 10, 7:00 p.m., Ballston Mall Food Court | Newcomers and seasoned crew members are invited to gather for the launch of CVN's second season helping out at the schoolyard garden at Arlington Traditional School. At this meeting, new volunteers can learn all about the monthly work days at the garden and hear from last year's regulars about the highlights of the season. We will also brainstorm ways we can deepen our relationship with the school and set goals for what the group hopes to achieve via service and social activities. Join us and get ready for a fun year of planting, growing, and learning! Questions? Contact Brynn Slate at brynngslate@yahoo.com.
  • ATS Schoolyard Garden Workday - Sunday, March 13, 2:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. | Lend a hand with the monthly crew of CVN volunteers for our second season helping out in the garden at Arlington Traditional School. On the 13th, we'll be building raised beds for the vegetable patch and preparing to paint a fence around the Colonial garden. Find out more, RSVP: Garden Sign Up
  • Family Ice Skate Night - Friday, March 18th, 7:30 p.m. - 10:00 p.m. | For the second year, CVN will be volunteering at Arlington County Office of Therapeutic Recreation's Family Ice Skate Night at Kettler Iceplex (Ballston Mall). The ice skate night is an opportunity for individuals with disabilities and their families to have some fun with the whole rink to themselves. CVN volunteers will help on the ice, so it's important that you are comfortable on ice skates. Last year this event filled up quickly and it was a lot of fun! Find out more, RSVP: Ice Skate Sign Up
